Improving Working Conditions for Security Guards in Cameroon

On March 28, 2025, a new collective agreement was signed at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security in Cameroon, aimed at enhancing the working conditions of security guards. This agreement marks a significant step forward for the private security industry.
Key measures of the agreement:
Wage adjustments in line with the minimum wage (SMIG):
Security guards in categories 1 to 6 will receive a 22.2% salary increase, while those in categories 7 to 9 and 10 to 12 will see increases of 0.6% and 0.3%, respectively.

Decent working conditions:
The agreement ensures safer and more respectful workplace standards for all security agents.
Strengthened social dialogue:
The drafting of the agreement involved eight rounds of negotiations between stakeholders, demonstrating a strong collective commitment to improving the sector.
Labour Minister Grégoire Owona praised the agreement and encouraged continued dialogue for future progress. He also announced plans to extend this model to other sectors.
The spokesperson for the employer group, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting the government’s support for elevating the security profession.
A workers’ representative emphasized that the revision was necessary to align wages with the current minimum wage of 60,000 FCFA, which had been in effect for two years.
This agreement represents a major step in recognizing and valuing the profession of security guards in Cameroon.
